The Fine Art and Craft of Woodcarving Birds

Imagine a woodcarving of a gold finch so real that you will argue that it is covered in real feathers or a hawk that pierces your eyes with his intense stare so real that you are sure his eyes are following you about the room. How about smoothly carved ducks and waterfowl so richly painted that their wings and feathers become three dimensional or a decoy so realistic that not only does it fool the ducks but the hunter as well. This is the Art of today's Wildlife Bird carver. www.pbase.com/gomaasculptures

Coopers Hawk

Today's carver incorporates the latest technology available. There is a wide variety of tools and equipment that has made it possible to reach such a high degree of excellence and fine detail. Power carving (the use of power driven cutting tools) has made the job of rough cutting to shape more exact and faster, allowing more attention to be paid to the pose and stature of each bird. As the bird takes on shape and the detail becomes finer, so do the tools being used. Some as small as a needle point. The veins of the feathers may be so delicate that they are created by low temperature burning. This creates an amazing effect by evaporation without wood removal. In the meticulous process of painting, air brushing is used in a layer after layer application of color to replicate the birds real color in the wild. This is used in tandem with brush and oils and/or acrylics.
